Bingo Winner refused Benefits

Cheryl McCann won a £50,000 jackpot whilst playing at her local bingo club, but is now reportedly back on the breadline after blowing the lot! Cheryl did split her jackpot win with her best friend whom she was playing bingo with at the time, which should have left her around £25,000.
You are only allowed to have a certain amount of money in the bank to still be able to claim benefits, (which is a very good rule) so this meant that all Cheryl’s benefits were stopped after winning this huge cash prize.
The Yorkshire evening post reported Cheryl blew all her bingo winnings on luxuries such as driving lessons, a new car, holidays, TV’s and furniture for her home. Once she was penniless again, Cheryl tried to re-claim benefits, but this time the Department for work and pensions, refused her claim.
Finally the benefits office seems to have made a good decision on this one. How can it be right for someone to win that amount of cash, spend the lot, and once it’s all gone think that they can just re-claim benefits again, so they can sponge off us hard working tax payers………it’s appalling!
Most of us would never have £25,000 to do with as we want in our lives and instead of Cheryl spending her bingo windfall wisely, i.e. investing it or putting some away for her children’s education for when they get older etc, she just spent it all and they from the looks of it expected to be kept by the state once more.
It is a shame to see such a huge bingo windfall not being put to better use. Bingo has always been a game about luck and chance, which is one of the reasons why is has become one of the most social gaming activities there is to partake in.
We don’t know the legal standing behind the department of work and pensions refusal to give Cheryl state benefits’ once again after blowing such a large amount of cash. But we assume at some stage they will be obliged to pay Cheryl benefits once more……………however maybe they should make her get a job to support herself and her three children………..after all that’s what millions of other single mums do every day of the week.
